My Fair Lady

This smash hit musical, written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, is based on George Bernard Shaw's classic play, Pygmalion, first performed in 1913. Its roots reach back to Greek mythology, and the story of the sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with one of his creations which then comes to life. The myth influenced a number of writers in the Victorian era.

First opening in 1956 on Broadway, My Fair Lady tells the story of Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, who meets by chance Henry Higgins. Higgins is a linguistics professor who is determined to prove that he can teach anyone to speak in such a way that they will be accepted by the highest ranks of society.

While a wager is made on whether or not the professor can fundamentally change Eliza's speech, and therefore her prospects in life, it remains to be seen exactly who will be changing who as the story progresses.

The show was performed by the Belfrey Theatre, Wellington in July 2022.
